Soviet Albemarles
Rather than go off topic on the Soviet P-38 thread, I wonder of Oleg can comment on the possible existence of an Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle in Russia? A number were supplied to the Soviet Union during the war and delivered by Russian crews who had converted to the type at Tealing. A photo of an Albemarle on skis, taken in the 1950s, is said to have appeared in an aviation mag around that time. I can't really imagine that a mostly wood construction aeroplane will have survived till now, but you never know!

yes one Albemarle was in russia and I have some photos of this airplane with red stars, it was search at Flying Research Institure, but what happened next - I do not know...

Here is one of several shots of Russian Albermarles that have appeared in various references, particularly those of the splendid 'Red Stars' series by Carl-Fredrik Guest.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Looks like we will have to be content with the few Albemarle remnants from a quarry in Cumbria. What became of them, I wonder?
By the way, when I wrote Tealing for Soviet training, I meant Errol! |
I heard a terrible story that the considerable remains were scrapped again with just a few representative parts left - not a great or sucessful aircraft but like the ark one or two should survive surely to remind us of the breed.
Now whose got the guts to start albermarle to the sky Or Botha to the sky or ................................. Regards John P |
It's a nice looking aircraft. I have a few stainless steel plates that I suspect are from an Albermarle - none of the part numbers match those of the Whitley. Perhaps they are from something earlier... who knows.

I have come across parts from an Albemarle that carry Whitley part numbers, the only I have to hand is an alloy bracket carrying the number SP67958 1 C7887.
