Australia’s F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft are now equipped with the world’s most modern missile capability following the introduction into service of the Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM), Defence Minister Robert Hill announced.

Ummm, except that capable short range AAMs are available in such numbers and are very effective WVR missiles that close in dogfighting is really something most fighters will want to avoid if they can. Having a not quite so capable WVR missile that doesn't kill your enemies aircraft till 5 seconds after your aircraft has exploded in flames is not much consolation for either pilot.

Expect to see the RAAF acquire something like the AIM-120D or Meteor in time as well. :)

yeah but the asraam still gives them a much needed boost in capability...so is australia firm on replacing its hornets with the f-35A...

At this stage, yes.

wouldnt it be more logical for the raf to try to get the f-35 C type of layout on their jsf so that they can benefit more from the longer range and better slow speed handeling and not have to deal with the increase in weight.

view that asraam is a enhenced missile from old technology! a bit like Amraam!

nothing have the modernity of the Mica!

not only the Mica have the weight of a asraam, but he have tvc and greater speed & hypervelocity, but have twice the asraam range, more it's the only one anti BVr missile that can be retargeted dynamicly!

look when yours F18 have 4 asraam and 4 amraam, they have 4 short and 4 BVR weapons!

when a M2k-5 have 8 Mica he have 8 shorts and 8 BVR weapons!
